Master Class The spirit of Nihonga - inspirations from Japan
Content of the course :
During this 5-day workshop you will learn how to paint a decorative panel inspired by the imagery used on Japanese folding screens. Emphasis will be on painting a decor in the style of the Rimpa School, one of the major historial schools of Japanese painting. Used in wall hangings, folding screens, ceramics and laquer, Rimpa School also greatly influenced the Art Deco and Art Nouveau movements. It also influenced symbolist painters like Gustav Klimt, impressionists like Manet and Monet, and post-impressionists like Whistler.
Japanese aesthetics continues to inspire artists and designers throughout the ages.

Overview:
Emphasis on this course will be on leading students to render a beautiful decorative panel inspired by the spirit of Nihonga, using modern techniques and materials. As you learn how to create an aged imitation gilded background, you will explore the aesthetics and finesse of Japanese style decorative painting.
What you will learn:
- How to prepare an aged imitation gilded background
- How to transfer the design on to the canvas
- How to paint with acrylic gouache and its medium
- The entire process of painting a decorative panel inspired by the spirit of Nihonga
- How to sign your name in kanji
- How to protect your painting

Level: This course is open to all levels.

Each student will paint on his or her canvas - size approximately 120cm x 70cm (provided by the school)
